Today is Russia Day, appropriately enough in Russia!



Also in the USA it is "Loving Day", a day celebrating the striking down of all remaining miscegenation laws by the Supreme Court in the decision of Loving vs Virginia, thereby removing any legal hindrance to marriage between any races.
  

1819 English cleric, university professor and author Charles Kingsley is born in Holne, Devon. As a Church of England priest he was very concerned with social welfare and reform, a subject he turned to in his most famous novel, " The Water Babies" in 1861.

1897  Robert Anthony Eden is born at Windlestone Hall, County Durham, he became Conservative Prime Minister between 1955-57. He is generally ranked amongst the least successful Prime Ministers of the twentieth century, though several commentators have reassessed his place in history in a more favourable light.


1920 English actor and screenwriter Peter Jones is born in Wem, Shropshire. Despite making numerous films and TV appearances, he is probably best known as " The Voice of The Book" in the original radio 4 serialisation of Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", a role he reprised both on L.P. and BBC TV.

1925 George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st President of the United States is born in Milton, Massachusetts.

1941 Lead singer with The Troggs, Reg Presley is born as Reginald Maurice Ball at Andover, Hampshire.

1942 Dutch schoolgirl Anne Frank receives a diary for her thirteenth birthday.

1957 Mohammad Javed Miandad, controversial Pakistan cricket captain and coach is born at Karachi.


1957 American saxophonist and band leader Jimmy Dorsey died from cancer aged 53yo.


1966 The NHS opens the country's first public funded hospital for dolls, St. Jeminas in Manchester. The first patients were a headless Cindy and a stuffingless Teddy Edward. Dr. Stanley Sadcase said the prognosis for both patients were good and he looked forward to future happy results for new arrivals. Funding for the hospital was withdrawn by Nasty Health Secretary Jeremiah Cunt in 2013 and the hospital closed down in January 2014.

2003 American acting great Gregory Peck died from bronchopneumonia aged 87yo in Los Angeles, California.
